The Little Richard classic Get Down and Get With It raised the roof every time - how good are they? (rhetorical question).... It boggles the mind how Noddy got so much attack in his vocals without rupturing his throat, makes most 'heavy metal' singers sound wimpy by comparison He made Extreme Noise Terror sound like Jimmy Somervilleđź‘Ť

Despite his delicate falsetto, wee Jimmy was no wimp. I saw him singlehandedly batter 4 homophobic yobs who jumped him outside a club in the West End back in the 80s

I cannot get my head round Jimmy being some kind of Bruce Lee hardman figure He's only five foot two inches tall!

Outside 'Bang' on Charing Cross rd, 88-ish (?) As we were on our way in, 4 chavs jumped out of a cab, clocked him and started giving him s*** for being gay. 2 of them ended up un the deck and the other 2 ran for it. He was only a wee fella but he sure could handle himself

I've only just discovered that Don and Dave have split It happened back in Feb 2020 I've got to say I'm reeling Slade have split after 53 years together.
The news of Dave Hill's Slade going their separate ways was shared by drummer Don Powell on his personal website on Monday.
The drummer claims that he found out from guitarist Dave Hill - the only other original member of the band, who he has been pals with since the 60s - that he was axed via a "cold email."
A statement on Powell’s website said: "It is with great sadness and regret that Don needs to inform his fans that he now is no longer a member of Dave Hill’s Slade.
"Dave has sent Don a cold email to inform him that his services are no longer required, after working together and being friends since 1963."Incredible www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/slade-split-after-53-years-21432824The big issue with Slade, and a lot of successful groups, is that the ones that get the publishing are pretty much set for life. Noddy and Jim each receive a huge cheque each in January from the annual sales of Merry Xmas Everybody. Poor old Don and Dave have to continue schlepping around playing gigs to make ends meet. The thought of having to tour, especially their kind of touring which is probably quite basic, as old men in their 70s is horrendous Hard to imagine that now having two versions: Don Powell's Slade Davd Hill's Slade is going to make it any easier for either of them And Don sacked by email by Dave! What a rotter!

Both had strokes anorl!!. Must be hard to maintain the lifestyle they once had without any entitlement to royalties. Some years back, Chip Hawkes from the Tremoloes came into the shop. He has an investment in a few holiday homes further down the coast. Nice bloke and he told me they are still playing the chicken and chips in a basket gigs. He co wrote a few of their minor hits and royalty cheques still land on his doorstep. Can't recall exactly but he told me one of his songs featured in some nineties Hugh Grant rom com, no more than a snippet playing on a background radio, bought his granddaughter a car with the performance rights proceeds.

If I remember rightly some of the tracks on “Play it loud” were credited to the whole band. Not sure about “Beginnings”But from Slayed? onwards it was all Jim & Noddy.

I believe it was bit like Andrew Loog Oldham with Mick and Keith, Chas Chandler told them to write a follow up to Get Down and Get With It (a cover version) and so Nod and Jim came up with the still totally wonderful... Coz I Luv YouIt features Jim on violin, rocketed to number one and the rest is history Ker-ching!

Recently bought a "Best Of" Slade compilation. Was surprised (and a little misty-eyed) how many vivid childhood memories came back from listening to some of the songs I hadn't heard for the best part of 40 years. I loved Slade when I was a kid, but sort of forgot about them after discovering punk. I only saw them live once, they were on the "Donington Monsters of Rock" bill in the early 80's when I allowed myself to tag along with a van-full of heavy-rock mates. They were having a bit of a resurgence at the time, and were absolutely great live. Holder screaming "fuck off" at 3,000 decibels at an annoying low-flying plane during their set was a particular highlight. Got some pipes on him, that boy!
