Yeah, I wouldn't include The Raven but the first 3 and the live one were great for what was after all a stodgy old pub rock bandwagon jumping combo with a Ray Manzarek fetish.

The weird thing is, Greenfield wasn't a Doors fan and had hardly heard them when he joined.

...Yup and also the keyboards he used were completely different to The Doors - Ray used a Wurlitzer electric keyboard, then a VOX Continental. Dave's keyboard sound evolved as the bands music did and he expanded his collection to suit.

I don't like JJB's 'ageing hardman'persona. He was known as a bully back in the day. Not a cool look at any age.

The Raven was a departure from their old style. The variety on it is incredible. Almost virtuoso😎. Still 'punky' but always exuberant. The last great Stranglers'punk' album.

Dave was too much of a free spirit to be melancholy.

I hear it in anything from Joy Division to Poison Idea which is incredible. However, we all know he's a killer karate guy so why waste his time on wimps like Jon Savage?🤔 It's kinda a bit like John Lydon reinventing himself as an Arsenal soccer hooligan😎

Just had a listen to 'Dark Matters'.Obviously, one listen isn't really enough to aurally digest it but on first listen I don't dislike it.
'The Last Men on the Moon'is a great song mainly due to Dave Greenfield's presence and helped along with a bit of pace which is always a good thing.
I'm not sure of Warne's singing throughout though, seem's a bit undistinctive and bland.
However, will reserve judgement until I've given it a dozen or so listen's.
Very well produced I might add.

I don't like JJB's 'ageing hardman'persona. He was known as a bully back in the day. Not a cool look at any age. On that podcast he is very matter of fact about his dust ups (he mentions in passing "I was no stranger to violence") and does describe the odd fight, in answer to specific questions, including one with Paul Simenon, in a very matter of fact way - maybe even a bit embarrassed? Either way he doesn's seem to glory in it. Listen, I know next to nothing about him or his past, and am basing these comments on one recent podcast which I enjoyed. Whatever reprehensible things he might have done in his life he comes over as intelligent and charming. Surprisingly so, to me. Not excusing anything, just sharing those impressions. Thanks again to Stu for highlighting the Rockanteurs podcast - well worth a listen if you're interested in the era and/or The Stranglers. Interesting interview - thanks Stu

Speaking of punk and violence, Bob Harris is on Rockonteurs tomorrow.

These days JJ Burnel has been more honest, candid and shown more humility about his past infamy, than many other notorious musicians and accepts criticism for it. As the quote from him on the Stranglers book 'No Mercy' clearly states after he read it... "I didn't realize i was such a psychopath. It's all true!"

Good for you for keeping an open mind but my opinion of JJB and his blokey misogynistic plastics' group was set in stone back in 77
