I've seen that several times and I think Lydon is trying to hold in the giggles at the absurdity of the programme he's on. Is it canned laughter? I dunno but I'd like to think that the audience are laughing with him (not at him) at the absurdity. Maybe lots of Pistols/PIL fans snuck into the studio?

I have the impression the audience are with him
That level of confrontation and disinclination to "play the game" were unusual on TV in 1979 so reckon their reaction is fuelled by a degree of surprise and disbelief

...when it was screened, the BBC knew full well what they were letting themselves in for. Lydon was so sharp back then... calmy dissing everything they were presented with... he ducks out of passing judgement on The Banshees excellent 'Playground Twist' though, which Alan Freeman and Elaine Page praise.
Who knew that 40 years later he would turn into a Pantomime Dame.

Yes, the transformation has been quite dramatic
Unlike most people John seemed wiser and more perceptive as a young man than he does now he's an OAP

It's years since seen I've seen it but I remember thinking that Elaine Paige just sees right through him - as women always do - an angry kid who just wants to be loved. And as his mum had very recently died that's perfectly OK.

...you could be right Stu. i hadn't thought of that... but then again, perhaps she didn't know his mother had died.
But if you watch the complete show, Elaine Page and John clearly are comfortable and relaxed being sat together and seem to bond, where as he doesn't at all with Noel Edmonds, Fluff Freeman and Joan Collins. John seems to be determind to dislike everything that they are played throughout the show.
