Don't remember JL's hair looking like this
He's on quite good form here (in the bits I've watched)

...Rotts had 'big hair' for much of the late 80s. I saw that line up of PiL around that time and they all wore clothes akin to that of A Flock Of Seagulls. That MTV interview is funny... he handles that clueless Knobend interviewing him with the thinly veiled contempt he deserves! This was from 1988... one of the best things for TV he ever did...

'Jimmy Rotten'๐
Good to see he was in the presence of some real talent with Rory Gallagher.
Wonder if he was whimpering all the time about Irish people-in their own country-taking the piss out of his 'cockney' accent.๐

I like it as an idea Yes, desperate perhaps, but also quite funny too It's a commercial and melodic tune that could just get the nod Here's the song he hopes will be Irelandโs selection for Eurovision 2023... PiL - Hawaii

Or is any second gen person whose parents are both Irish but who grew up in another country automatically plastic? Wouldn't that make Shane McGowan plastic? Also many friends of mine who'd probably take exception to being labelled plastic

Or is any second gen person whose parents are both Irish but who grew up in another country automatically plastic? Wouldn't that make Shane McGowan plastic? Also many friends of mine who'd probably take exception to being labelled plastic Lydon has never been interested in his Irish heritage at all and has actively attacked Irish people in his book 'Anger is an Energy'. He considers himself as English first and foremost. Again, his choice. His entry in Eurovision is pure opportunism. Shane McGowan conversely considers himself Irish and is proud of his Irish heritage. It's not necessarily where you're born that makes you 'anything'. I would consider myself both Irish and Scottish due to my family coming from Donegal and I've been going to Ireland ever since I was a child. As for your friend's, if they're born in England and consider themselves Irish as well as English and are proud of their roots, good luck to them. The plastic remark was aimed at Lydon who doesn't give a fuck about Ireland.

Fair enough
I donโt recall him saying anything particularly pro or anti Ireland but always thought he had some affinity with his roots. Maybe not though
His brother Jimmy did 4 be 2 which riffed on an Irish sound for their One Of The Lads 12 inch single which I still enjoy to this day

Maybe not though His brother Jimmy did 4 be 2 which riffed on an Irish sound for their One Of The Lads 12 inch single which I still enjoy to this day You should read 'Anger is an Energy' whereby he slags off Irish people for 'making fun' of him because he talked with a London accent amongst other things He's actually quite vociferous in his condemnation of his 'roots', which makes this Euro nonsense all the more surprising. I don't think he's ever hid his English nationalism. The thing is with Lydon these days is you don't know to what degree he's lying. There seems to a Walter Mittyness to him... If people want to celebrate their Irish roots that's entirely up to them. However, attacking others for having an Irish identity is not on. Growing up in a society which doesn't even recognise and subsequently attacks the ethnicity of Irishness in Glasgow makes people acutely aware of their Irishness and any cultural and political aspirations that go with it.

I have read Anger Is An Energy, and No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs is by far the better book I agree, these days you can't take anything he says at face value Anger Is An Energy is quite a tedious read where he tries to settle a lot of scores. There's a disclaimer/apology at the beginning from the publisher about it being "John in his own words" which basically means no one edited the thing. Reading it felt like being trapped next to the pub bore who is slightly pissed, wants to hold court, and goes on endlessly whether you're interested or not I don't recall any condemnation of his roots. That doesn't make a lot of sense I've certainly seen interviews where he states his Irish heritage gave him musicality - and he seems quite proud of it He's from Finsbury Park and there was a massive first gen Irish community round Holloway in the 1970s which is why Arsenal had so many Irish supporters back then, helped by Brady, O'Leary and Stapleton all regulars in the first team Either way it's convenient for him to be Irish when it comes to Eurovision 2023 Back to 4 be 2 - Jimmy Lydon plus Graham Wheeland, Martin "Youth" Glover, Dreary O'Hoodlum, Jock McDonald, Paddy O'Reilly, Paul "Youngie" Young, Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin of Bananarama - and John Lydon - plus supposedly Lydon Snr too. Strong Irish vibes coming of this... With the 12 inch dub version being an old favourite and the Paddy Disco Dub Funk sound cranked up even higher - alas can't find it on YouTube They went on to make this...

His first book is definitely more authentic.
His hostility towards the Irish is definitely there in that horrible other book.
Will try and dig it out if I can find it but it's possible it went to the charity shop.
