I prefer the early psychedelia /English pastoral whimsy or the Syd days to the full blown prog period. I can fully appreciate the studio brilliance of "Dark Side" but like other great "studio" bands such as Steely Dan, the music has a rather cold and detached sound to it. Animals has grown on me over the years and have to say this solo Waters gig is impressive.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDTWsuyDYRM&t=4776s(posting link only as not sure if posting a whole concert affects the smooth running of the board)

This is just sublime
Though Gilmour is trying to sound like Syd Barrett in parts

...Yes, that's why ' Relics' is such an essential compilation. It covers the early singles and where the band were heading without Syd.

So, a reworking of Animal Farm (with some acerbic lyrics)?

So, a reworking of Animal Farm (with some acerbic lyrics)? It's a lot more vicious than 'Animal Farm'. I don't think Politician was alluding to a reworking of 'Animal Farm' par se.

Yes, whilst the lyrics clearly drew some inspiration from Animal Farm, they're by no means a reworking of the novel. But what makes Animals so remarkable is the quality of the writing – both the lyrics and the music – and the sheer energy of the performances on side two.

The energy on side 2 would give a few of the punk bands of that year a run for their money.

Also agree about the cold and detached sound
The energy on side 2 (of Animals) would give a few of the punk bands of that year a run for their money. Given you and Doug have praised the album I just listened to Side 2.
Energetic is not the first adjective that comes to mind. Bits of it chug along agreeably enough and have a certain prog pomp.
I'm still not feeling it to be honest. Maybe better than Dark Side which I've heard a few times (though do enjoy Great Gig) but I'm not getting punk levels of energy off it, far from it.
Sophisticated and clever are the words which come to my mind.

Its better than a lot of punk albums of the day.
And let's be honest a lot of punk then was badly, played bubblegum pop.
If you can't feel the pure energy of 'Sheep' you're not listening properly.
However, each to their own.🤪
Incidently, Barrett was a very, small insignificant part of Floyd's career.
Best to leave him in the obscurity that he wanted.👍

Barrett was an abusive partner but this is a strong number

Yeah. Gotta love Octopus - I read somewhere Dave Gilmour is drumming, he definitely helped Syd with his solo recordings
The first single by Syd Barrett as a solo artist & released on 14 November 1969, two months before The Madcap Laughs.
A remarkable song... the lyrics and imagery and the rhythm.
Syd...
"I carried that about in my head for about six months before I actually wrote it so maybe that’s why it came out so well. The idea was like those number songs like ‘Green Grow the Rushes O’, where you have, say, twelve lines each related to the next and an overall theme. It’s like a fool-proof combination of lyrics, really, and then the chorus comes in and changes the tempo but holds the whole thing together"
The song seems connected with fairgrounds and various rides. The Octopus was a ride which was popular at the fair on Midsummer Common in Cambridge

I wouldn't call it energetic, but it was certainly a cut above the mogadon levels of DSOTM and WYWH. Also seems to have aged far better to my ears. Watched a live gig by "A Saucer Full Of Secrets" the other night. Nick Mason's, Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt's band harking back to the early days. Okay, but lacks the anarchic energy of the real psych days.
