Yet another expanded reissue... David Bowie: Divine Symmetry review – Hunky Dory box set shows an artist’s ch-ch-ch-ch-changesA four-disc compilation of demos and rarities offers a refreshing riposte to today’s ‘Bowie is perfect’ industry, with ill-advised covers and middle-of-the-road pop co-mingling with the decade-defining genius of his 1971 masterpiecewww.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/24/david-bowie-divine-symmetry-review-hunky-dory-box-setAnyone tempted?

I got the Moonage Daydream DVD today. Half an hour in and I'm not impressed at all. You can hardly hear his voice for a start. I think they know they could do better than this but of course it'd be too much to ask for to simply give people what they want when they can give us a load of "cool" arty nonsense.

Watched another hour , slightly better.
Some great footage of Earls Court 1978, Heroes and also footage of the fans going in. I didn't spot many punks - was it really so old hat by mid '78 in London??
I believe Station To Station isn't touched on, which is criminal really.

I was at that gig and it's true, there weren't many punks and yes, I think many of the original punks were starting to move on. Also perhaps many of the young punks were not necessarily Bowie fans

I wasn't impressed either, just loads of cut ups and snapshots of various periods. Will give it another chance sometime but seemed rather a missed opportunity.

Thanks Stu, thanks Doug
My expectations are now dialled down
I'll report back after Xmas when I've had a chance to watch it
It would have to go some to best the Five Years docs
I generally find the art approach an interesting alternative way of viewing someones life and career - so hope I'll feel positively about it
I have listened to the soundtrack album quite a bit and am enjoying the live tracks, edits, remixes, dialogue etc, and think it works well as an album. Let's face it no one needs another Bowie comp, or indeed another rote, chronological documentary
Watch this space

I watched it this evening and enjoyed it more than you Stu A doc that does its complex subject justice. Could be subtitled the Life and Philosophy of David Bowie. Concentrates on the most interesting moments of his career therefore very selective and all the better for it. I have a high tolerance for artiness 🤩 - though didn't think the aesthetics were overdone That said, I doubt I'll ever watch it again 4/5

I got the Moonage Daydream DVD today. I watched it this evening I watched it last night. The key takeaway for me was the footage of the fans and their comments. In the early - mid 70's he was pushing artistic boundaries whilst being screamed at by teenage girls, an impressive feat. Also interesting to see him barely holding it together whilst off his tits on Charlie.

It's interesting how some people become untouchable icons, don't get me wrong, i love Bowie, but when he tries half a dozen musical style changes that don't work in the 60's he's a flop but do it again and be successful in the 70's and you're a genius surfing the zeitgeist. Certainly peerless in the 70's, but very hit and miss after that with the exception of the great "The Next Day". Could do with some objective writing on him rather than the usual hagiographies.

Didn't know Steve Ignorant had done a limited edition Bowie EP (to raise funds for a punk internet radio station I think)

Didn't know Steve Ignorant had done a limited edition Bowie EP (to raise funds for a punk internet radio station I think) I think I might have had one of the tracks as part of my 'Five for Friday' selections last year. Steve Ignorant was a big Bowie fan hence 'the kids were just crass' doubt he'd be Rimbaud's cuppa though.
