It's interesting how some people become untouchable icons, don't get me wrong, i love Bowie, but when he tries half a dozen musical style changes that don't work in the 60's he's a flop but do it again and be successful in the 70's and you're a genius surfing the zeitgeist. ... Could do with some objective writing on him rather than the usual hagiographies. No solo artist working in the popular music sphere before or since can beat David, and I'm speaking from a purely objective standpoint. Little Richard, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder had good runs but nothing that came close to the body of work he produced in his classic period. Yes agree

I remember it vividly, I had a disagreement with my girlfriend as I wanted to watch it and she wanted to go out, I won. We didn't have a video recorder. A five track EP with songs from the programme came out about the same time, completely different from what he was doing at the time and it barely troubled the charts.

There is a school of thought that he burnt so bright 72 to 80 that it carried him over the following decades with very average output. Let's Dance was a sacred cow, I can't recall anyone giving it a negative critical review, even though it was a lifeless exercise compared to his back catalogue.

I think that's right PU
Let's Dance is fine but average in comparison with what came before
Thereafter there's plenty to enjoy but it doesn't compare with the imperious 70s, and there's a few stinkers in there too
No one will ever persuade me there's any merit in those god awful Tin Machine albums

Love him but no way did he have the string of work that Dylan did. Dylan was almost faultless up to around Street Legal, can't think of any artist with a decade and a half run like that. It's all personal taste, but for me Bowies run was from '71'77 before the inevitable drop off began. All personal taste though, of course. I'm sure others can think of some other bands or artists with long runs of classic output.

I think the Baal EP was his very last release on RCA.

No denying his talent as a wordsmith, but to my ear most of his stuff was done better by other people apart from 'Highway 61'. I'll take David from 'Hunky Dory' to 'Heroes' every time.

I count myself a pretty big fan of David Bowie. His output from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters is untouchable, IMO.
He had a stretch of meandering from Let's Dance through Black Tie, White Noise.
That said, I could Blackstar and Heathen among his finest work.

I've been stuck on a bit of a loop listening to 'Station to Station' 'Low' and 'Young Americans' recently
This material is nearly 50 years old and yet it sounds like it's from the future

That's a fine loop to be stuck on
I have times like that too
