Inspired by Johnny's post in now playing here's a thread to discuss Garage and Psych, the roots of punk in many way with its raw, energetic and basic style
The Beatles and other British invasion groups inspired kids all over the US to pick up instruments
Who are your favourites?
What are you favourite tunes?
Let's kick things off with an all time classic...
The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard

One of my faves from Lenny Kaye's Nuggets box set. The Beinz take an old Isley Bros soul tune and give it the garage treatment. Everything in there, call and response, handclaps, two note Farfisa and scruffy guitar solo. A joyous racket.

i got well into Garage & Psych in the 80s... but over 10 years earlier, i had heard The Electric Prunes "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" played on Radio One as a 'blast from the past' not realising that they had recorded several albums and not knowing anything about the genre.
This is another Prunes fave...

Not sure who the song originally belongs to as there are versions by the Chocolate Watch Band and I Rocking but this is the definitive one for me.

Not 60's, but the best psych band of the last 4 decades is the wonderful Nick Saloman's "Bevis Frond".

The Creatures - Ugly Thing [Sydney, 1967]
Originally from Mildura, The Creatures had long died hair: blue, green, red, purple and pink.
The name of their song was later used for a 60s music compilation series and a magazine dedicated to 60s garage music.

Wimple Winch - Save My Soul [1966]
Any thread about 60s psych has to include this belter from Merseyside

Ultimate US garage group The Kingsmen have lost their remaining original surviving member....
Mike Mitchell, who recorded one of the most famous guitar solos of all time for the Kingsmen’s Louie Louie, has died aged 77
No cause of death was given. Kingsmen drummer Dick Peterson told Rolling Stone: “We are deeply saddened by Mike’s passing. He was the kindest and most generous man on the planet … Mike was a favourite for his comedic nature as well as his musicianship.”
Mitchell was the last remaining original member of the group, who formed in Portland, Oregon in 1959. Their cover version of the R&B song Louie Louie, released in 1963, reached No 2 in the US charts and became the definitive version
Louie Louie
With Mitchell’s guitar solo adding a crazed energy to the three-chord recording, the song is a cornerstone of the garage rock sound.
It was the subject of an FBI investigation into the lyrics sung by frontman Jack Ely, which were suspected to be obscene, and got the song banned in the state of Indiana.
What the FBI missed was at c54 seconds if you listen not too carefully you'll hear the drummer shout "Fuck" after he dropped a stick
Ely’s performance – which features a famous error as he comes back in too early after Mitchell’s solo – was rendered brilliantly unintelligible thanks to the band’s lo-fi recording into a single microphone suspended above the band

...interesting to learn about and hear all the mistakes on that classic track, Nigey. I think it's one of the most covered songs... ever! This is a wonderful Psyche Garage Punk band, i love. Best known for their 'Hit' Talk Talk... but this is equally great. Turn On ... The (Sean Bonniwell) Music Machine

Not all, but many. It only started a week or so ago. Anyone else having this problem?
Meanwhile, there is a fantastic CD about Louie Louie that brings together so many different versions of the song, songs that influenced it and songs it inspired. A whole CD of Louie Louie must be boring, right? No, it is brilliant. It ends with the wonderful version by Toots and The Maytals

I am getting a recurring problem with youtube on this site, as many of the posted clips merely say this video is unavailable. Not all, but many. It only started a week or so ago. Anyone else having this problem? I think it's a licensing thing. Certain songs in certain territories. What happens when you click on the link? Can you see on it on YouTube? If not it's something about the tracks and Australia (in your case) I always type the artist and the name underneath so if the link gets withdrawn, deleted or is unavailable at least anyone reading knows what the song was
