^^ Lucky you. Sandinista would have made a good double album or a great single album. Cut The Crap would have made a decent 45.

(...as i think i have already mentioned on here) The original demos of what became 'Cut The Crap' with the full band, before Bernie Rhodes got his hands on it are actually pretty good. Not as good as when Mick was in the band of course, but still much better than the final official album that killed the band.

What does everyone think of Combat Rock ?
It does for me contain one of their very best songs Straight To Hell. Rock the Casbah is probably one of their best known songs by the general public. Should I Stay - I can't get away from the obvious Stones influence. The rest of it ranges from interesting to filler.

...a wonderful record, chocked full of great songs ...oh alright ...apart from "Overpowered by Funk" but overall an exotic mixture of obvious 'hit singles' and whacky experimentation. Sure, "Straight To Hell" is perhaps the highpoint, but for me, this haunting song in particular brings memories of 1980s Bristol Bed-sit land...

I love Overpowered By Funk, Topper's drumming at the three minute mark is phenomenal. Some say Combat is the Clash's most unfocused album, for me it's their most experimental and even after all these years there is always something new to find on it. With hindsight, you could say where could they have gone from here? Maybe the variety of Combat was their end, the four of them all had different musical roots and it stretched them too far maybe? Or Mick was just a prick....

Or Mick was just a prick.... I think the root of the split is that Mick was burnt out from touring and Strummer and Simo wanted to carry on while they were on a roll.

Depends on which biog you read. Loads of documented incidents of Mick having to have a driver deliver Ribena to him before he'd get out of bed. And when he actually made it to the studio, if he wasn't the last one there, he go back home until he knew the other three were there, so he could make a prima donna entrance. He now admits that he was difficult to work with in the final months of his tenure.

Hard to imagine Mick being difficult
Seems like such a nice man
But if he admits it then it must be true
Combat Rock is very good
As you all say above. Surprisingly experimental as well
I always thought the Clash split because Mick was more interested in going in a hip hop inspired direction (like he did with BAD) but Joe was more into getting back to basics like he tried to do with Cut the Crap which is crap. Sorry loz

Not wrong, aimed firmly at the US, "Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg" is still superior for me and opens the sound right up.

Aye, they wanted to 'crack' America and become rock stars.
If people like that stuff fair enough but for me, it was by and large, vacuous pap.

...they'd moved on and were no doubt trying not to repeat themselves. Whatever they did, they were going to get criticised for it. They'd seen quite a bit of the world by then and their lyrics reflected that.
