The problem with Doug and Right wing nationalists like him, is that they aren't talking about football at all. It's just a vehicle. As for the media not talking about 1966.😄 It's mentioned in every report AND every game which features the England team. I think you've possibly become immune to it so you don't even notice they're doing it👍 Oh, and we are back to me being a "right wing nationalist". Only one bigot on this board has ever chosen to attack one country on just about every subject that comes up. Wonder who that is, and who the country is. My God, you need some vinegar with that chip.  Provide evidence of anti Englishness. Not in football. That's an opinion on a football team. I've gone back five pages and checked every post - you're the only poster who has mentioned 1966 (repeatedly too). No one else apparently, if HE brings it up and you answer his post then YOU are obsessed with it and not him. Work that one out. It was brought up in the context of the Tier system and nothing else. I'm hardly going to cheerlead a victory for a football team I don't support. Who would? Would you? |

The droning on about 1966 is also quite funny, it's so desperate 😄 I'd say the media are more realistic these days and people no longer go on about 1966 given the majority of people alive now have no recollection Current form for most England fan's is 1966!! Less than 10 years after winning in 1966, England missed the party in '74 and '78. What ranking did they have then? Both Italy and Gernany have won major trophies since 1966 ...what was the point of winning in 1966? Presumably, it was irrelevant that England beat West Germany in 1966 then? You're the ones that bang on about 1966 all the time but when you win fuck all, it's suddenly not about success but'competing' and 'community' |

Yes, in the context of the World Cup, it's justified to understand why England are in the 3rd Tier of World Football.👍
Also, it's the most predominant narrative when it comes to ANY competition against ANY team and how England are a better footballing nation than them.
It can be an implicit argument as well as an explicit argument.

A lot more realism and recognition of the merits of other national teams
Very little mindless jingoism these days
Again, I'm no England fan, so have no skin in the game - but I do read a lot and listen to a lot of podcasts and feel pretty clued up when it comes to this stuff
Your comments would certainly apply between 1970-mid 1990s - not now though
Always a few entitled and deluded fans though - same as every club/country

You certainly don't see it in the media. I've absolutely no problem with people who have done something in the game like Linekar and Shearer(or anyone) supporting their team and wanting them to do well. However, to say that England over the years have been a top international team just isn't true. When they start winning tournaments and getting to finals on a regular basis I'll give them the credit where it's due. To me it's always tinged with something more sinister bordering on the ugly. Incidently, if this Doug character wants to accuse me of being 'anti English' then I 'll be wanting him to prove theses unfounded allegations. Let's hear them. |

It's not as if you write "I am anti English" or "I hate the English"
My perception is that you slag off English people and the football team quite regularly on here
I'm not going to trawl back looking for evidence though. Life's too short
Perhaps you're not anti-English?

However, if he can't, he should keep his opinions to himself or he's going to look even more stupid than he already does.
It's a pretty ignorant allegation. You can criticise imperialism and what it actually does to people(as I have done with both Scottish and Irish people), socially, culturally and politically- does make it 'anti-English'? Of course not.
Glasgow was as culpable in the slave trade as Liverpool and Bristol were. It doesn't mean everyone in those places agreed with it.
Tony Wilson of Factory records believed in a cultural 'regionalism' for the North of England but it doesn't necessarily manifest itself in animosity and/or antagonism towards other cities.
I like the differences between people but that doesn't mean ignorant people who can't see beyond their own metropolitan noses can bandy about a slur just because someone doesn't agree with the perceived supremecy of their football team. They should either put up or shut up.
I'll debate with anyone about what constitutes 'anti-English' any time.

Croatia have been crap v Argentina. Only won two games outright in this tournament. They can have no complaints.
Would be a nice fairy tale to see Messi win this at 34 in probably his last World Cup. France winning it again would be so boring.
