I'm quite happy to argue on the basis of statistics that I can find. If you really want me to research crime levels and ethnicity in Possilpark, I'll have a go, but is there really a point? As for the other issues you raised in your earlier post: I never used the phrase "British ethnicity". You did, so it's for you to tell me "what the fuck" it is or is not. As for being on a street full of immigrants, probably the last time I was in London. Douglas is relatively diverse, but I wouldn't say the streets are "full of" minorities. Yes there is a point. What exactly do you think it will prove if Possilpark bucks national trends? It won't disprove the national statistics: that's a fundamental logical fallacy. As for "British ethnicity": I repeat – I did not use that phrase. You did. "British" is a nationality not an ethnicity. You're the one tripping over here. The fact that two groups of people have differing cultures does not mean they are of different ethnicities. A working-class South Londonder would have completely different cultural touchstones from a Scottish laird, but they're both still caucasians. The problem is that you're using language in a very elastic way here – using terms to mean what you want them to mean, not what they actually mean. |

The problem is that you're using language in a very elastic way here – using terms to mean what you want them to mean, not what they actually mean. Many people don't understand this, like my friend who wrote a scientific paper on the ethnicity of Scandinavia. His supervisor made so many revisions that the only thing that saved him was the opportunity to buy a research paper. If his work had not been done by professionals, he would not have graduated from college, I am 100% sure of it. |
