I started to watch coverage on Sky Arts of the Isle of Wight festival over the weekend, but couldn't get past the ubiquitous opening clips of gurning white middle-class people in their designer outfits and glitter-painted faces, attending for that 'festival experience'. I might watch a bit of Glastonbury coverage on the BBC, but not going to go out of my way. I went to Glastonbury in '85 ( very wet ) and '86 ( dry and warm ), but couldn't deal with going now. Too many people now, amongst many other reasons. Had great fun in the two years I went. Mates on one of the food stalls, giving back the same amount in change as we'd handed over to pay

Yeah, it's a young person's game innit? I'm not sure if I'll ever go to a festival again now. All that schleping about with trolleys for miles is a bit much. But, never say never, there's quite a few smaller ones that might yet tempt me. Or go back to the ATP style Butlins ones which I've always enjoyed. Maybe Rockaway Beach 2023 www.rockawaybeach.co.uk/OMD and Peter Hook + The Light already confirmed

And likely to do a two hour set What do we think of sets that go on and on and on I think Jesus and Mary Chain had the right idea with their 20 min sets Also the Beatles, Stones etc on those early package shows Get on, give us yer best 20-30 mins, then fuck off again Trouble with gigs now often costing big bucks is that artists feel compelled to justify the prices with a long set zzzzz

I wouldn't, absolutely loathe the whole "load the kids up in the 4x4, get the hamper and off to Glasto, darling" nature of the thing. Too many medium sized and above bands also have dumped touring for the rounds of the festival circuits instead which is helping kill off venues. It is to music what RSD is to vinyl.

Wow Harsh, but perhaps fair? I'll ask my daughter when she's back. She left this morning She's volunteering in the kidz field Seems to me Glastonbury is like an iceberg. There's the bits we see on telly - the main 3/4 stages (a fraction of what's on) - which is commercial and where 80% of the attendees focus, and then there's the rest. Just loads and loads of more out there and esoteric fare. This seems to be where the original spirit of the fest might be found. It's really extraordinary how much stuff there is on Scroll down this link and you'll see what I mean... www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/line-up/line-up-2022/?stageThat recent Temple film seemed to hint at a lot of other things happening there I'm just speculating though - it's too big for my tastes but I do wonder...

original spirit of the fest Long gone. Eavis is a badger-killing bread-head. Your post made me wonder about how much he makes from the Festival I found this recent article... Despite the festival's humble origins, it is now one of the biggest festivals in the world. But while Glastonbury attracts globally renowned artists who help fill the festival's coffers with hard-earned cash, its founder pays himself a salary of just £60,000. This salary figure comes from Glastonbury Festival's reported £32m turnover. Eavis, 86, donates the remainder of his profits and gives £2m to charity. Eavis is thought to give the money away as 'he doesn't want to carry profit into the next year' according to the Daily Mail. It is claimed that the company that organises Glastonbury Festival has £10m in the bank, which acts as a buffer to help against unforeseen circumstances. Emily Eavis, 42, daughter of Michael Eavis and co-organiser of Glastonbury Festival, told the Today programme: "Contingency is really important to us. The elements are so unpredictable. "We are completely at the mercy of the elements. We have to sell out to breakeven because the event costs so much to put on - about £40m. Our other goal is to be able to give the charities we support about £2m a year. Glastonbury employs about 50 people full time." www.somersetlive.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/michael-eavis-net-worth-glastonbury-7229315AND "I get a wage of £60,000 but I pay more than that to my cowman," said Eavis, who also finds the time to be a farmer. "I am not going to buy a flashy car – I bought a Mini for my wife 14 years ago. I don't really like going on holiday – I just have a little cottage in Cornwall. He added: "There is no money stashed anywhere. We do a lot on the charity side – we aim for £2 million a year. I like to go into the following year on the edge – I like that. I like the challenge. Yesterday, the girls said there is a quarter of a million left over. I said let's get rid of it, send it on to the charity today." www.gigwise.com/news/97138/michael-eavis-reveals-how-much-he-makes-from-glastonbury-profits

I'm sure she will love it. It's almost a rite of passage in the same way that every kid seems to go to Uni and have a "gap year" now days. I just think that music to most younger people is just another "thing" in their lives. So much has to vie for time with them that they don't have the obsessions we used to.

Got in after midnight and watched the last hour of McCartney's set. At eighty no wonder his voice has gone, the flanking guitarists trying to swell the vocal sound. The irony of Springsteen joining him on stage and singing Glory Days, a lyric of how boring it is to live in the past, seemed lost on social media pundits.

It's just so politically safe. Just another once radical game co-opted by the straights. (man)

Yeah, I caught the last hour too, his voice as you say has gone, but these sort of things are pretty much glorified singalongs than going to a real gig aren't they? Drum sound also sounded terrible to my ears, very dampened. I thought "Glory Days" was done on purpose for that reason and it's all just mutual back slapping with these guest spots anyway. Non music for a non music loving audience. (harsh I know, but there must be more worthy acts, rather than old men and women in love with themselves)

Surely they had young men and women in love with themselves as well? We need a balance
