I know, it's curmudgeonly, but I think it is also a fair point that the whole idea of what started out as meaningful and radical has become sanitised to the point of cloying middle class nausea. On site "glamping", Tory wives attending, flag waving, back slapping celebration of the freedom to feel a rebel as long as you can afford the £300 entry ticket into the stage managed, Harrods hippy wonderland. Just hope most of them managed to survive 3 days without The Guardian to tell them what to think. It is what it is I think the original vibe and ethos lives on to an extent Of course it's changed, the world's changed No festival can get a licence without stringent safety measures and security - probably more of a good thing that not, despite the loss of some of the edge and lawlessness Personally I'd say you're over thinking it. It's not for you. Fine. But plenty of people, including friends of mine who, as I say, would fit in here perfectly and who you'd happily bond where you ever to meet, absolutely love it. I've never been. The scale puts me off but I've been to many similar events and it's usually v enjoyable... ...music, culture, sunshine (sometimes), communal living, a sense of being outside normal life etc. Not for everyone but, if you like that sort of thing, what's not to love?
If you don't, feel free to ignore it

I've been to outdoor gigs and I just don't like them.
Especially in daylight. That said I would like to go to Glastonbury just the once. (If only to pay my respects at the Joe Strummer thing) Despite the fact that they generally ignore bands who I like.

^ My daughter's going to that one too Good call I used to get in for free when my daughter worked for them. I could still get in free for a 12-hour shift on the gate but I couldn't be arsed so I paid £170 for a locals' discounted ticket. Silly money but it's my only blowout of the year, hey ho.

I'm with Mick Farren, "tear down the fences". IMO it's not a proper festival if you don't have to run the gauntlet of axe-wielding greasers www.ukrockfestivals.com/henge-history-80.html

Today Politics Weekly (Guardian) podcast was recorded at Glastonbury - highly recommended
Andy Burnham especially inspiring
It will also give you a different view of Glastonbury and specifically what goes on in the Leftfield and the Greenfields - evidence that the progressive political traditions live on

If Labour had chosen him or the right Miliband as leader the country would likely not be in the mess it's in now
