Ah right. Glad we've got that one cleared up Who were the edgy acts at the free festivals? Hardly any I'd heard of or remember, but there were some right oddballs playing Henge back in the day... along with a lot of awful biker bands that sounded like a 3rd rate Quo. Hawkwind and Here & Now were notable staples of the free scene, and later on you got that crusty punk wave with the likes of the Mob, Rubella Ballet, etc.

festivals used to be edgy ?
I'd rather have a nice time than have to worry about hells angels or greasers beating the shit out of me /
those free festivals were like everything else back then . you took your life in your hands .
I 'd rahter feel safe than have go back to those dark days .
Edgy is just romantic nostalgia for a time that was good in many ways , but was not pleasant when it came to feeling secure and just being able to have fun .

I only went to Stonehenge once, early eighties and there was an air of menace, grebos and road rat types squaring up to anybody who so much looked their way. There were plenty of other free festivals such as Strawberry Fair, Leamington Peace etc that were violence free and great fun.

I went to Henge 5 years running. 1980 was the scary one.
The greasers resented the influx of punx but the Windsor Hells Angels (all 27 of them) kept a lid on the tension.
When they left the site on solstice night all hell broke loose.
Free festys were anarchic: you took the rough with the smooth, same as the free rave scene prior to the Criminal Justice Bill.
On balance it was a bundle of fun and sorely missed by the majority who participated.

Or better to sacrifice that for an anarchic unpredictability, with all that might entail, both good and bad? Now I'm in my 60s I'll go safe over wild any day. I don't want my tent torched, my possessions stolen, or to witness or be involved in any violence and intimidation. What about you?

I've seen Hawkwind and Rubella Ballet - both enjoyable enough but not exactly Bad Seeds or the Ants or King Kurt etc.

I've paid to get into organised events where my safety was threatened by 'security'. Duno about edgy but Hawkwind and H&N were certainly far out, and put on a good show. Loads of lesser known acts played that were even further out. The punk groups that played the festys were in the anarcho vein mainly. The music wasn't the best but they had something to say. My band used to wander round the site with our gear and play sets on various random stages, it was free and easy like that.

No one mentioned this yet? Apart from PJ Harvey there is nothing on my radar. Radio 6 is wall to wall nauseating interviews with festival goers asking about their 'Glasto' experiences.

My kids are there yet again
Both in their 20s now
They love it though both underwhelmed by the main acts
All the actions away from the Pyramid etc
Young persons game though innit
I’m currently on a walking holiday up north. Lovely

nauseating interviews with festival goers asking about their 'Glasto' experiences. Glasto is shallow. I'll be at Boomtown having it out to D&B alongside loads of teenagers off their tits on E and Ketamine
