Given the risible state of the UK it's a wonder that anyone would want to come here when there are other options. It's no surprise to me that we're 19th on the list, per capita.

The media frenzy is to whip up hatred against asylum seekers so they can keep their voters in line whilst they shaft the rest of us.
Hence 'flood', torrents', 'invasion'.
The race card played every time.
The British State uses it time and time again....

Currently doing my legal dissertation on how the human and social rights of “illegal immigrants” are protected in U.K. law and how this might change going forward so I’m knee deep in all of this stuff

Amazing that it's the Home Secretary doing it though
Not a good look at all and whilst it might play well to a hadful of racists ultimately it's going to be counterproductive
Another example of the moral bankruptcy of the Tories. Enough is enough

Enough is enough You seem surprised thst the Tories are capable of this.🤔 They are disgusting, loathsome creatures. The dregs of humanity.

I am surprised
The Tories saw UKIP's policies and basically nicked them
What it means is the party has lurched to the right and vacated the centre ground
I don't see how that works as a strategy
The centre is where most voters reside
The only people who will respond to Braverman's dog whistle, far right tactics are old reactionaries who are dying off
Younger people have no tolerance for it and they are looking at the Tories with horror, as most moderates are too
It makes no sense, especially as the Labour market desperately needs more people. Why take years to process asylum applications? Whilst the asylum seekers are in limbo they cannot work and are costing the Govt money. Bonkers. Process the applications quick and get them working

You should have more of an overview of what they've actually did throughout the decades and indeed, the centuries. They've just widened their bigotry. It's absolutely no coincidence that, aside from New Labour, the party they are closest to politically is the DUP. Who throughout their 5 decades of existence made UKIP look like the Greens.

inews.co.uk/opinion/extreme-catholicism-is-pushing-the-conservative-party-ever-further-to-the-right-1583048
...suggests that it is extreme Catholicism that is pushing the Conservative Party ever further to the rightJacob Rees-Mogg is the ultimate born and bred Catholic. His sons are named after Saints, he regularly votes against LGBT marriage, is staunchly anti-abortion and is so dedicated to the old rites that he broke lockdown rules to attend the only Tridentine (Latin) Mass in his diocese. Should we still remain in any doubt as to his apparent Divinity, there are regular Christmas and Easter tweets to remind us that He is Holy. As an equally devout Tory, Rees-Mogg has also selflessly dedicated himself to a life of profiteering, which included using his company Somerset Capital to invest in a company which manufactured abortion pills. He advised that the company was based in Indonesia, however, and followed Indonesian law, making it a “legitimate investment [because] the law in Indonesia would satisfy the Vatican”. His recent response to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s criticism of the plan to send refugees to Rwanda looks like typical Tory arrogance. Speaking on Radio 4 this weekend, Rees-Mogg said: “I think he misunderstands what the policy is trying to achieve, and that it isn’t an abandonment of responsibility, it is in fact a taking on of a very difficult responsibility.” Rees-Mogg, along with MPs Tom Hunt and Priti Patel (who also challenged the Archbishop), are all proponents of a new, hard-right brand of Conservatism with its roots in extreme Catholicism and a singular target in so-called “woke” culture. Both Rees-Mogg and Patel showed early support for Turning Point UK (TPUK), the far right, Christian student organisation which attempted to instigate a “war on woke” across UK university campuses. Patel has made her feelings clear in a number of ways, including measures which ensured critics of the Government were not invited to Parliament and her continued pushback against the Black Lives Matter protests. Hunt has limited involvement with the Church, but is a member of the Common Sense Group, whose manifesto gets a full house on your “war on woke” bingo card. Lacking an actual crusade to get behind (and having already demonised Islam), it appears they have opted instead to declare war on progressivism. While even the Pope has softened his stance on LGBT marriage, Rees-Mogg and co appear determined to keep the UK in a state of Old Testament pearl-clutching horror. The Common Sense Group (CSG) is chaired by Sir John Hayes, a Conservative MP and staunch anti-abortionist, who wrote in CSG’s manifesto that a culture war was “vital to a national rebirth”. Taking a stance which would see Hate Speech laws repealed, immigration capped at 100,000 (for reasons they do not provide) and the BBC broken up, CSG have more in common with far right political wannabes Patriotic Alternative than Conservative voters. Hayes is also on the board of the Orthodox Conservative Group (OCG). Formed from the leftovers of Turning Point, the OCG are, as a recent investigation showed, equally dedicated to removing wokeness from politics, returning corporal punishment to schools and ensuring statues are safer than those fleeing political persecution. Many of them see Rees-Mogg as aspirational and have suggested via the “Moggmentum” campaign that he would make a good Prime Minister. Traditional Catholicism features heavily in both groups, and at least one member of OCG supports the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), a Catholic splinter group whose far right leanings are well-documented. As with Rees-Mogg’s preferred church, they only celebrate the Mass in Latin. They have also been noted as a hotbed of anti-semitism by both SPLC and ADL and have a blog which contains such delights as “Glorifying Homosexuality is a Sign of Society’s End”. I don't see what relevance Catholicism has to the Tories and their involvement with imperialism in Ireland and their relationship with parochial fascism in the six counties. You can get right wing Catholics, communist Catholics, royalist Catholics etc
The DUP have taken over from the Ulster Unionist party as ideological bedfellows. Their fundamentalism may be different but it suits the same end and the same master.
Why else are they trying to further enshrine the so called 'Northern Ireland Protocol' as a contemporary unionist veto over power sharing with nationalists and liberal unionists?
Especially, when the protocol was negotiated between the current Tory government and the EU?

I guess like most religions Catholicism is underpinned by a traditional, patriarchal world view, and of course is staunchly anti abortion, anti homosexuality etc. As you suggest though, many other extreme religions share their reactionary stance. The DUP is also anti abortion, anti LGBT rights, and even I have heard pro-creationism

The DUP are fire and brimstone religious bigots and they are right wing politically and economically
Modern day Sinn Fein, who contain a 'Catholic' but less so membership, are a progressive, left wing secular modern day party.
SF have moved beyond both the militarism of the IRA and De Valera's Catholic Ireland.
Whether you like it or not the most notable architects of this were Adams and McGuinness although along the way they've had some significant comrades ie the likes of Sheena Campbell to name but one.

Braverman's incendiary "invasion" rhetoric has backfired spectacularly
Last night Edi Rama, the prime minister of Albania, accused Braverman of “fuelling xenophobia” and “singling out a community”
Immigration minister Robert Jenrick has rejected Suella Braverman’s comments comparing small boat crossings to an “invasion” saying he “would never demonise people coming to this country in pursuit of a better life”
A YouGov poll for ITV's Peston revealed that just 6% of the public think that the government is doing well on immigration
Madeleine Sumption, the director of the Oxford Migration Observatory, said: “This is not an invasion – it’s not an army. But if instead she is referring to the number of people coming, we can compare the figures to other countries and see that the numbers coming in to the UK are relatively manageable.”
Braverman made the controversial remarks just days after Rishi Sunak pledged “compassion” would be at the heart of his administration
How much longer can she hang on?
