The Dead Don't Die Forget the lukewarm reviews, this Jim Jarmusch Zombie outing is an absolute hoot. Middle of nowhere small towns plagued by the living dead. Alongside aging sheriff Bill Murray and woodland hermit Tom Waits, this is packed with stars, Buscemi, Danny Glover, Tilda Swinton. Iggy Pop turns up too as a coffee obsessed undead. 8/10 Yes. Watched this the other night. Very enjoyable Also stars Adam Driver and Chloë Sevigny I loved the deadpan performances of Bill Murray, Adam Driver, and Chloë Sevigny as the small top cops It's also clearly a film about climate change, using the zombie motif as a way to confront how we are failing to avoid something slowly lumbering towards us. The deadpan cops representing a non commital and accepting response to the the inevitable pending disaster. A Zombie film for the Extinction Rebellion generation. 8/10

Hitman's Apprentice
Not to be confused with The Hitman's Bodyguard. Quirky, blackly comic UK thriller with Tim Roth as the grizzled contract killer and Jack O'Connell as the young, naive chav type who drives him around. Came out ten years ago and must have passed me buy. Good, standard Brit flick. 7/10

Bad Trip (2021) Dir by Kitao Sakurai
This hidden camera prank comedy is basically 80 minutes of high octane hilarity. Some sections had me crying with laughter.
Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery star as best friends Chris and Bud who take a road trip to NYC from their small town in Florida so that Chris can declare his love for high school sweetheart Maria. Pursued by terrifying Trina, Bud's criminal sister, the duo get embroiled in various sticky situations whilst members of the public look on in varying degrees of shock.
Hilarious, and strangely endearing too.

Hell (El Infierno)
Spanish language Mexican thriller with the tale of a simple everyman sucked into the vortex of a violent drug cartel. Works on several levels, brutal and gory, blackly comic and an indictment of the corruption running throughout Mexican society.
8/10

1917
WW1 action tale of two young British infantrymen who have to cross no man's land to deliver a vital message to a forward platoon. Fantastic photography of bleak plains, bomb craters and once living detritus. Compelling. 9/10

Ones to avoid:
Gemini. Will Smith as a retiring assassin hunted by his clone. Lifeless and formulaic.
Kate. Another assassin who wants to retire and gets poisoned for her troubles, yawn.
Rise of the Krays. The Kemps and Tom Hardy did this so much better. Low budget constraints means it's basically just fights in pubs and snooker halls.

Everyone seems to be talking about something called Squid Game I'm tempted, the Asia film industry does the survival of the fittest genres far better than the West, Battle Royale was a classic. Just a bit reluctant to get sucked into series that go on season after season.

Watching Sex Education on Netflix atm, absolute shite, literally the shittest fucking thing I’ve seen in years.
It’s like an inferior, less funny, less natural version of Skins mixed with an even less funny version of Big Mouth with a dash of Green Street 2. I’ll run through some points:
All the actors are well into their twenties (and they look like it) yet it’s set in a secondary school.
“Maeve” is a cut & paste Effy from Skins.
There are lockers in a school in England for some reason.
Similar to Ricky Gervais’s “The Invention of Lying”, it’s set in England yet it’s very clearly a US production.
Can’t seem to decide whether it’s set in the early nineties or 2017. I literally can’t tell at times.
Occasionally funny, to be fair.
It seems kind of weird that this 16-year old virgin can solve complex sexual and social problems in minutes because his mother is also a sex therapist. Also, as the victim of sexual assault at the ages portrayed, my issues with sex were nowhere as intrusive on my life as every person in this show.
Random American actors that appear to be exchange students (Gillian Anderson is from Chicago, not Islington).
The Inbetweeners is a miles more funny and interesting exploration of sexuality and attitudes towards sex and masculinity.
One of the main character’s is threatened with military school in E2, am I watching Malcolm in the Middle? Of course not, MitM is actually good.
Fuck this wretched, anachronistic bullshit. Seriously.

Just watched Squid Game, episode 1. Very good indeed. Poverty stricken Koreans enrol in a series of games to pay off their debts. High budget, fantastical sci sets. Not going to binge watch but looking forward to Ep2.

Squid game, update. I'm on episode three and it's immensely enjoyable. The juxtaposition of children's games and the brutal violence for failure is jarring.

Fight Club
Saw this with my ex wife on its first release. She hated it, I gave her such a slap....
Originally derided by some critics this is now a cult classic and an excellent tale of the powerless male in the modern world. Norton and Pitt are outstanding as the alter egos who bond and then clash, even minor player Meatloaf is great as the hormone therapy gone wrong heavy weight.
