I don't see how this will get off the ground. The opposition to it is massive. Even the Tories are repulsed by it.

I don't see how this will get off the ground. The opposition to it is massive. Even the Tories are repulsed by it. On the other hand they do seem pretty determined to see it through I felt sorry for Klopp last night. He must be seething. If I was him I’d be tempted to resign. There are so many shameful aspects to the whole spectacle but that none of the owners has fronted up is right up there with the very worst I think it shows the massive disconnect between the owners, who only seem to care about where their next billion is coming from, and the supporters who are where the true heart of a club is located. One thing I will never understand is a billionaire who only thinks about getting more. Think of how much good they could achieve and still be rich. I really think the best outcome would be for the Dirty Dozen to fuck off and play each other endlessly whilst the rest of football can re-balance. Think how much fun the Prem would be without them. So much more like The Champ and much more competitive. Bring it on

Apparently Chelsea and Man City are wavering... www.theguardian.com/football/2021/apr/20/chelsea-and-manchester-city-have-super-league-doubts-says-executiveGiven the owners have done this with no consultation and given their lack of understanding of the culture, they obviously had no idea what they were about to unleash in terms of the backlash and negativity. I cannot see how it could possibly be a success if they do get it off the ground. What broadcaster would want to be associated with such a toxic brand? The issue is, now they’ve revealed their hand, this will never go away. The trust has gone and, if they stay in their domestic leagues, the other clubs will always imagine they are plotting. Ideally they just fuck off and suffer the consequences of such hare brained thinking. But in that scenario their fans, who don’t want anything to do with an ESL, are the ones that suffer. What a shambles. I guess it will probably end up with some kind of patched up solution that will last til the next bust up. Some things remain reliable, the peerless David Squires and, in this instance, his take on the ESL... www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2021/apr/20/david-squires-on-the-plans-for-a-european-super-league

Public Relations damage limitation in action.... Manchester City, announced at 9.23pmManchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League. Liverpool, 10.55pmLiverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued. In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions.
Arsenal 10.55pmThe last few days have shown us yet again the depth of feeling our supporters around the world have for this great club and the game we love. We needed no reminding of this but the response from supporters in recent days has given us time for further reflection and deep thought. It was never our intention to cause such distress, however when the invitation to join the Super League came, while knowing there were no guarantees, we did not want to be left behind to ensure we protected Arsenal and its future. As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League. We made a mistake, and we apologise for it. We know it will take time to restore your faith in what we are trying to achieve here at Arsenal but let us be clear that the decision to be part of the Super League was driven by our desire to protect Arsenal, the club you love, and to support the game you love through greater solidarity and financial stability. Stability is essential for the game to prosper and we will continue to strive to bring the security the game needs to move forward. The system needs to be fixed. We must work together to find solutions which protect the future of the game and harness the extraordinary power football has to get us on the edge of our seats. Finally, we know this has been hugely unsettling at the end of what has been an incredibly difficult year for us all. Our aim is always to make the right decisions for this great football club, to protect it for the future and to take us forward. We didn’t make the right decision here, which we fully accept. We have heard you. Tottenham, 10.55pmWe can confirm that we have formally commenced procedures to withdraw from the group developing proposals for a European Super League (ESL). Chairman Daniel Levy said: “We regret the anxiety and upset caused by the ESL proposal. We felt it was important that our club participated in the development of a possible new structure that sought to better ensure financial fair play and financial sustainability whilst delivering significantly increased support for the wider football pyramid. “We believe that we should never stand still and that the sport should constantly review competitions and governance to ensure the game we all love continues to evolve and excite fans around the world. We should like to thank all those supporters who presented their considered opinions.” Manchester United, 10.55pmManchester United will not be participating in the European Super League. We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders. We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game. Chelsea, 12.45amAs reported earlier this evening, Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it has begun the formal procedures for withdrawal from the group developing plans for a European Super League. Having joined the group late last week, we have now had time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community.

At least Arsenal had the decency to apologise.
This was nothing less than an attempted coup d'etat (for the whole of football eventually IMHO) and because it failed they think they can pretend that they weren't forced into withdrawing by the overwhelming opposition to it.

I would like to think that the anger of the fans, Fifa, Government against the big six has not dissipated and the Glazers, Levy etc are hounded out of football ownership. But these club owners will hunker down for a bit and once the turnstiles reopen, things will go back to how they were, which wasn't great tbh.

Theirs to blow it. PSG sparkle occasionally but City should see it out. If City sign Kane next season, they will dominate Europe for a few years.

Brilliant though Kane is, I can't see City signing him - too old and too injury prone. Better spending that kind of wedge on a younger, fitter version

City a class apart. Soaked it up and hit them with speed on the break. PSG were lucky to have only one sent off.
